A Handful of Joy: GPS mobile phones to die for

One day I got sick of reading stuff like this "520MHz Intel XScale PXA270 processor and has 64 MB RAM and 128 MB ROM. It features a 2.7-inch full-color QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) TFT screen, SDIO expansion slot ..."

On almost the same day (probably the day Apple announced the iPhone) I realised mobile phones had become interesting. Prior to this I'd had the same brick phone for about six years and then I bought a Motorola V547 which never really worked properly and then stopped working entirely.

What caught my interest was GPS. A phone with GPS gives you satnav, but it can also tell others where you are. You can play locational games with it, and you can always find your friends or family. That's a revolution .. it's like Star Trek only real.

The problem is, to buy a decent phone that does what you want means you have to deal with phone shops and my experience is the whole industry is out to confuse you. Scott Adams calls it a confusopoly.

So I decided to create A Handful of Joy. That name stands for two things: 1) these things are meant to be wonderful products you'll love, so let's make the buying process just as enjoyable, and 2) let's talk about what these phones can do, rather than what the clock speed of the chip inside is.

Basically, I want to sell phones in a completely different way.

All very laudable. Now this site is in its very very early stages. I'm busting with stuff I want to do but everything takes time so where you see a kludgy bit, forgive me .. and keep coming back.

Right. Now let me get on with creating this thing of beauty ....
